Why does Docker use content-addressable storage for layers?

Senior Docker
Quick Answer Content-addressable storage means each layer is identified by the SHA256 hash of its content. Two identical layers (same files, same content) have the same hash and are stored only once รขโ‚ฌโ€ regardless of which image they came from. This enables deduplication across all images on a host and in registries without extra effort.

Answer

SHA256 layer hashes enable deduplication, integrity guarantees, and caching.
